Edge computing goes live on Smart Mountain 5G

Two days at Le Bourget-du-Lac, putting edge computing into the 5G core and onto the pilot site.

Numerisat hosted our team at their offices in Le Bourget-du-Lac for two days of work on the European Smart Mountain 5G project. Together we reached a new stage of the project, deploying edge computing at two levels: inside the 5G core network hosted at Numerisat, and out in the field, directly on the pilot site at Aussois.

The objective is straightforward. Moving compute next to the data cuts response times and opens the door to uses that a round trip to a datacentre cannot support:

  • Real-time video processing
  • Intelligent analysis of camera streams
  • Ingestion and processing of sensor data
  • Digital twins of the site
  • Distributed AI running close to the people and the equipment

It is another technology building block for Smart Mountain 5G, and a working demonstration of what private 5G, sensing, edge computing and AI do together for mountain territories.
